Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Dear Parents/Carers

Thank you for your continued support this term. The children have worked very hard and deserve a restful Christmas break.

Please find below an overview of the topics we will cover next half term. We hope you will find this useful.

English

In English children will be exploring stories with predictable and patterned language based on stories written by Julia Donaldson. Children will also begin a non-fiction unit where they will create non-fiction pages linked to our History topic, The Victorians.

Maths

The children will continue to reinforce and consolidate place value and number bonds, using numbers up to 40 as well as learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

History

The children will be learning about life over 100 years ago in Victorian times. We will be travelling back in time to experience life in a Victorian school! This will include a trip to Holly Lodge in Richmond Park. More details will follow closer to the time.

Art

Year 1 will learn about Cubism and Expressionist art through the work of Franz Marc. They will learn to identify warm and cool colours and use contrasting colours in an abstract animal collage.

Science

The children will be learning about how they use their senses to explore the world around them. Children will also revisit the ‘Our changing world’ topic and continue to discuss how the seasons change.

Music

Children will be exploring pitch.  Children will be developing their ability to discriminate between higher and lower sounds and to create simple melodic patterns by ear.

ICT and computing

In ICT children will be learning about control technology and will learn how to program floor robots.

P.E.

Please ensure that your child has suitable clothes and trainers for outdoor P.E. and that everything is clearly labelled.  Please note if your child has P.E. period 1 or period 2 they are to come to school dressed in their P.E. uniform with their school uniform in their P.E. bags. If they have P.E. period 4 they will come home dressed in their P.E. uniform with their school uniform in their P.E. bags.

Reading books

The children receive a guided reading book from their class teacher once a week. This book is read as a group and will be changed by the class teacher.   Please ensure that your child’s guided reading book is in their book bag every day, as their reading day may occasionally change.

 Reading records

All children have a reading diary which needs to be in their book bag at all times. Please read the class teacher’s comments and write any comments you wish to make after reading with your child at home.

Once again, thank you all for your support.  We hope you all have a great Christmas break and wish you all a Happy New Year!

 Many thanks
