Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Dear Parents/Carers

Parents/Carers evening is on Thursday 28th February. Please sign up for a time slot with your child’s class teacher from Monday 25th February.

Below is an overview of the topics we will cover this half term. We hope you will find this useful.

English

We will begin the half term by learning about a range of fairy tales and traditional stories. The children will write their own fairy tale based on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Later in the half term children will be investigating poems which have pattern and rhyme.

Maths

Children will be continuing to learn about addition and subtraction in the context of word problems. They will then move on to learn about division through sharing and about multiplication using repeated addition.

Geography

This term the children will be learning about food and where it comes from. As part of this topic we will be collecting food labels from around the world to demonstrate where food comes from – please start collecting labels at home.

Art

Children will be making collage work inspired by Matisse. They will learn the difference between organic and geometric shapes, positive and negative space and contrasting colours.

Science

In Science the children will be learning about plants and trees. They will learn the names of common plants and trees and classify them using simple criteria. Children will also learn about growing plants and have the opportunity to plant their own seeds. We will be going on a trip to Kew Gardens as part of our Science topic during the week beginning 18th March. More details to follow.

Music

Children will be exploring instruments in relation to dynamics, tempo, timbre and symbols. They will be exploring the different ways sounds can be changed on musical instruments and creating symbols to represents those sounds.

Your child needs a complete change of clothing for PE, including trainers or plimsolls. If they have PE period 1 or 2 they will need to come into school dressed in their PE kit with school uniform in their bags. If they have PE period 3 they will need to come to school in their uniform with their PE kit in their bags and they will get changed and unchanged during the school day. If children have PE period 4 they will need to come to school in their uniform and will be sent home in their PE kits.

Please ensure that your child has suitable clothes and trainers for outdoor P.E. and that everything is clearly labelled.

Reading books and Diaries

The children receive a guided reading book from their class teacher once a week. This book is read as a group and will be changed by the class teacher.   Please ensure that your child’s guided reading book and reading record is in their book bag every day, as their reading day may occasionally change. Please read the class teacher’s comments and write any comments you wish to make after reading with your child at home.

Many thanks
