Welcome to Year 1
25th May 2018
Please find below an overview of the topics we will be covering next half term.
Children will be reading a range of poems, writing their own and developing their performance skills. We will then extend our understanding of non-fiction writing. To coincide with our History learning, the children will create their own non-fiction page based on the life of Grace Darling. To finish the school year, the children will be writing their own fictional versions of ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’.
Children will be learning about money and understanding the value of coins and notes. They will also develop their understanding of measurement, including capacity and mass as well as consolidating their number knowledge in preparation for year 2.
Children will be continuing to learn about animals. They will also re-visit their learning about the seasons and make observations about the world around them.
The children will be creating animations based on Grace Darling, using Puppet Pals software.
Our topic is ‘Sex and Relationships’. A separate letter will be sent out, outlining what and how topics will be taught.
We will be learning about the history of Grace Darling and other significant events.
Children will continue to develop their singing skills. This will culminate in a singing performance on Tuesday 3rd July. Details will follow.
Children will have an introduction to Cubism, looking at the artist Frank Marc. They will make an animal collage that incorporates colour theory, mixing and blending tones of warm and cool colours.
Children will be reading ‘The very hungry caterpillar’ and continuing to learn through speaking, listening and songs.
The infants Sports Day will take place on Monday 9th July. More details to follow.

Please ensure that your child has the appropriate named P.E. kit on the correct days.
As the weather is getting warmer children are encouraged to bring in a named water bottle.
Thank you to the many parents that write a comment in their child’s reading diary. Please use the reading diary each week to inform your child’s class teacher on how your child enjoyed their guided reading book and how they progressed through it.
Please make sure that your child brings in their guided reading book and Reading Record each day as reading days may change.
If you have any questions, please speak to us in the playground before or after school.
