Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

The children have worked very hard this term and we are very proud of their efforts. We hope you all have an enjoyable and safe Easter break. Please find below an overview of the topics we will be covering next half term. We hope you will find this useful.

The children will be focusing on writing fantasy stories and stories from other cultures based on the texts ‘Cloudland’ and ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’.

Children will be consolidating and extending their understanding of place value, addition and subtraction using numbers up to 100.

Children will be learning about animals. They will also develop their understanding of planting and growing as well as continuing to learn about the seasons.

Our topic is ‘How are places different?’ Children will be considering how countries differ in terms of weather, food and culture. We will be holding a themed ‘International Day’ on Friday 25th May where children will have a chance to sample food from a range of countries. More information will be sent out next term.

ICT and Computing

Children will be researching a country as part of our Geography unit. Children will be using search engines to find information and pictures. They will then use simple software to create information posters on the iPads.

Children will be learning about world religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism). We will be asking for parent volunteers to come in to class for question and answer sessions! More information will be sent out next term.

Children will be using the wax resist technique to make artwork showing texture and pattern inspired by the artist Paul Klee.

Children will be learning the names of different animals, singing songs and playing games to help their understanding.

Children will take part in a singing project, where they will be learning lots of singing and vocal techniques.  They will learn range of songs in both unison and simple harmonies. There will be a performance to families at the end of the term. More information will be sent out next term.

Please make sure that your child brings in their guided reading book and Reading Record each day as reading days may change. Thank you.

If you have any questions, please speak to us in the playground before or after school.

Many thanks,
